Allied Course Offerings
Allied course offerings from New Britain EMS Academy can elevate your skill set and enhance your career. We are pleased to deliver high-quality and relevant professional development opportunities for the EMS providers of today. While NBEMSA offers ongoing regularly scheduled AHA, EMT, and paramedic programs we also offer other programs that can be scheduled upon request. Additionally, throughout our calendar year we offer special one time education programs outside of our regular running education programs as they become available.
Connecticut EMS-Instructor Course

Program Description
This 90 Hour Pre-Certification course is part of the process as outlined by the Connecticut Department of Public Health Office of Emergency Medicals Services for an active EMS provider to achieve certification as an instructor of OEMS approved curricula courses within the State of Connecticut. This course will be a combination of in-class lectures, distributive learning, homework assignments, and student lead class presentations. As a hybrid course, students will be expected to complete 25% of the required course hours using the Blackboard online learning management system.
***Prerequisites: Connecticut Department of Public Health, Office of Emergency Medical Services EMT certification or higher for greater than 24 months experience within the last 36 months.***
Safe Sitter
Founded in 1980, Safe Sitter® is the only national nonprofit training program exclusively devoted to preparing young teens to be safe in unsupervised settings, whether home alone, sibling sitting or babysitting.The Safe Sitter® curriculum is designed exclusively for young teens in grades 6 – 8, and covers the following areas: safety skills, child care skills, first aid & rescue skills, and life & business skills. Safe Sitter® courses are instructor-led and interactive, with hands-on demonstrations and skills practice using soft-bodied dolls and medical manikins.

Mental Health First Aid
New Britain EMS Academy offers the Mental Health First Aid for Fire/EMS course designed by the National Council for Behavioral Health and required for all new EMS personnel looking to become certified in the State of Connecticut
Mental Health First Aid for Fire and EMS focuses on the unique experiences and needs of firefighters and EMS personnel and is a valuable resource that can make a difference in their lives, their families’ lives and the communities in which they live. Firefighters and EMS workers learn about the importance of early intervention and how, as first responders, they can intervene in the field and provide direct assistance to someone who is experiencing a mental health challenge or crisis.
IPMBA EMS Cyclist (TBD)
Be first on scene! Nothing moves more swiftly through a crowd than a bike medic responding to a call for help. However you use your bike fleet, this essential emergency vehicle operations course will improve your response times and help you meet your goals. Learn to select and pack equipment, maneuver a fully loaded bike, and perform basic bike maintenance and on-the-road repairs. Course includes night operations, scenarios, and defensive measures. Off-road riding/search and rescue exercises may be added at the instructor’s discretion.
Certification: IPMBA EMS Cyclist Certification is available to qualified EMS personnel who successfully complete the practical test, earn a score of 76% or better on the written test, become members of IPMBA, and submit applications for certification accompanied by the appropriate fee.
Stop The Bleed®

STOP the Bleed® is a national campaign to cultivate grassroots efforts that encourage bystanders to become trained, equipped, and empowered to help in a bleeding emergency before professional help arrives.
This easy-to-follow program teaches you to:
- Understand the immediate response to bleeding
- Recognize life-threatening bleeding
- Apply appropriate ways to stop the bleeding
The help given by an immediate responder can often make the difference between life and death, even before professional rescuers arrive.
